Advice for competitors:  As we approach the weekend the weather forecast is for a bright day with a breeze which will keep the temperature down to around 14 degrees, apart from on top of the hilly bits . . .  The ground around most of the course is mainly firm apart from one short, slippy section that will be well marshalled with warnings.  As the course is multi-terrain the best footwear advice we can give is to wear road shoes or light trail shoes that have some support.  There are 2 water stations on the course and if you get thirsty near the end there's always the refreshing river crossing to satisfy you.  No roadworks to cause delay that we know of and the nearest postcode to race HQ for your sat-nav is HX4 8LS.  Look for the B6112 Stainland Road.  There will be a team of car park marshals directing you.

Refreshments and hot food will be available before and after the race.  Spot prizes will be drawn after race results & prizes have been awarded.

Have a safe journey, try and remember your allocated race number to speed-up number collection and we hope you have a race to remember!

Directions & route description:

The race HQ, registration and ultimately the finish is at Heath Rugby Union club, Stainland Road (B6112), Halifax, HX4 8LS - click here for map.

The race itself starts across the road at Clay House. Follow path round the front of Clay House down onto Stainland Road, after 100m turn sharp left up Clay House Lane, taking a right turn into the woods across from the walled gate on the left.

Follow the Calderdale Way signs for about half a mile until you reach a clear junction, at this point the Calderdale Way continues upwards. Take the right hand fork, heading down towards Copley. Keeping to the low level path until you reach Copley Church on your right hand side. Turn right onto Copley Lane, follow the road past Old Rishworthians Rugby Club and under the railway bridge until you reach the entrance to the canal side. The route now follows the canal towpath for approximately 1 mile until you reach Salterhebble Basin.

Go under the road tunnel and follow the Hebble Trail until you reach Phoebe Lane, turn left down towards the mills taking a blind bend en route. Take the cobbled path which joins Shaw Lane at the top. Turn right onto Shaw Lane and head up the hill for about 300m, take the cobbled steps down towards the side of The Shears pub and follow the road up Boys Lane for a short while before turning right onto Whitegate Road.

Follow Whitegate Road to the junction with Siddal New Road, turn left onto Siddal New Road, crossing to the opposite side near the entrance to the cemetery park.  Turn right at the junction with Water Lane *end of route change* and head up Swan Bank Lane taking the right hand fork of the junction - TROOPER LANE! This is the toughest climb of the race, 570 feet in just over half a mile. Once at the top cross the road to join a track onto Beacon Hill, the views from here are stunning if you have time to stop and look. Drop down the other side of Beacon Hill, turning right towards Long Lane. After about 300m take the track on the left hand side. Follow this track down to the bottom onto Norcliffe Lane. (This section is an old pack horse route to Wakefield).

Turn right up Norcliffe Lane until you reach a farm on your right hand side directly opposite a track on your left. Take the track on the left and follow upwards until you reach a concrete track on your left. Turn onto the concrete track and pass the quarry building on your left. At the junction go forward a few paces and then turn left onto Walter Clough Lane for approximately 200m until you reach a footpath sign hidden behind a hawthorn bush on your right.

Follow the field straight up to the top then make your way through the trees at the top right hand corner. Follow the footpath across two further fields, then turn left and follow the track past the farm towards Southowram Church. At the end of the farm track turn left, then immediate right, crossing the road to join a track by the bus stop. After about 100m you will reach a junction where four tracks meet, go straight across down the cobbled path. At the end of this short section turn right and immediate left into a field. Go to the top of the field and round the horses paddock which joins School Lane. Follow the lane to the top and turn left towards the Cricket Club. Take the path to the right hand side of the Club towards Park Road Woods.

Where the path meets a wall under a pylon turn left and follow the walled section to the bottom. Go straight forward following the path through the woods, it meanders slightly but actually runs almost parallel to the main road at the bottom of the woods on the left hand side. At the end of the path turn left down onto a red brick road which leads onto Park Road via Plains Lane.

Turn right onto Park Road towards Elland. Go past the Barge & Barrel pub and take the left turning down onto the canal. Follow the canal towards Salterhebble for approximately 1 mile. The river crossing to the finish is situated directly in line with Heath Rugby Club on the left hand side.
